The process begins with Woodford Reserve’s classic straight bourbon, crafted from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. After its initial aging in new charred oak barrels, the whiskey undergoes a second maturation in specially prepared barrels. These secondary barrels are toasted for 40 minutes and lightly charred for just 5 seconds, a process that intensifies the interaction between the whiskey and the wood. This double-barreling technique enhances the bourbon’s complexity, adding depth and character.
